The meeting provided an opportunity to evaluate recent developments in the Cyprus issue and to exchange views on the current efforts of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, including the contacts conducted by his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, in Cyprus and abroad.
The discussion also focused on how to build on the Joint Declaration of CPDC and Apofasi Eirinis, which calls for the resumption of talks on the basis of the so far agreed UN body of work, including reconfirmed convergences, and with an updated methodology. The Declaration stresses that “this time must be different” and calls for a phased, meaningful and results-oriented process, with an agreed mechanism for resolving possible impasses, transparency, and the effective participation of women, youth and civil society. It also underlines that the consequences of any failure should be made clear to both communities in advance.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the need for renewed momentum, meaningful preparation, and a process that can address the lessons of previous rounds of negotiations. The CPDC delegation underlined the importance of a structured process with clear objectives, public ownership, civic participation, and mechanisms that can help prevent another open-ended or inconclusive effort.
The CPDC delegation included Meltem Onurkan-Samani, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, Özdil Nami and Sıla Uluçay. The AKEL delegation included General Secretary Stefanos Stephanou and members of AKEL’s Cyprus issue and reconciliation team, Toumazos Tselepis and Ilias Demetriou.
CPDC will continue their contacts with political actors and stakeholders from both communities in support of a renewed, well-prepared and credible peace process.
